Any golfer, by definition of golf being a sport, is competitive. Even those who shun tournaments and only play what they describe as 'social golf', can't help but be competitive. Whether it is against an opponent, beating a previous score, playing the course or the elements, golf is always about competing, and ultimately competing against yourself.
No one sets off on the first tee wanting to play lousy. Even those most casual of golfers want to do well, sink some putts, and nail a long drive.
Golf is the ultimate competition because no matter what the game, what the occasion, we are facing ourselves every time we stand over the motionless white ball. Everyone is a competitive golfer, even if they don't admit it.
But then there are those for whom golf is pathologically competitive. Anyone who has played the game for any length of game knows how addictive it can be. The competitive club golfer takes this to the next level.
You'll see him trying out the new clubs in the pro shop, loitering round the club pro looking for free tips. He always has a new swing fix he's trying out, one he has read in the latest golfing magazine. But it is out on the course that his competitive bent really comes to the fore!
This is the guy who will count the clubs in your bag to see if you suffer a penalty before you play and put him in front. He'll explain how you can't get relief from the casual water, make sure you don't remove that branch over your ball in the sand trap, watch you as you take a drop and tell you that your arm was ever so slightly bent. He knows the rules, all of them and he knows when you may be infringing them even during casual rounds.
This is the player you better keep quiet and still for as they approach a putt-unless you want to face his frosty glare for the rest of the round. He will get his stopwatch out to make sure you don't go over the allotted time when looking for your lost ball. And this is the guy who will punch the air after sinking a six inch putt as if he has won the Masters.
Do you recognize this competitive golfer, is he at your club, or is he reading this, dreaming of that perfect round and the match coming up the weekend?
