I never could understand how golfers could glean pleasure from chasing a little white ball down the fairway. Watching golf games on tv did not tempt me in the least to investigate the sport no matter how impressive the shots and how lucrative and status quo oriented it was.

Only when my last boyfriend turned out to be an avid golfer did I make the effort to at least give it a shot. He was out there playing everyday so I figured I could sit in the golf cart and keep him company.

What got my interest sparked was when he kept commenting on how my long, lean physique was perfect for golf.

He could envisage me winning local tournaments with my age handicap.

That comment got the competitive urge in me going. It didn’t seem so silly going after that little white ball anymore. I agreed to go on the golf course with him one day. It was a small family owned golf course and hardly anyone was out there to witness my ridiculous form, and pathetic shots.

My friend was very patient in explaining to me the challenges for each hole. He reassured me that I should forget about worrying how I looked and to just focus on his instructions on how to carry through the swing.

I began to realize that the sooner I took over a kind of spiritual ownership of the golf course by familiarizing myself with it, and learning what it was that was required of me to do, the sooner I could see that the game was indeed very intriguing and well worth learning.

So much of anything that we do comes from self-confidence. As a beginner, we need to learn the process step by step, piece by piece. Each golf club must begin to feel as if it is an extension of our body and that it is designed for a particular movement that works together with our body and brain.

I believe that the reason some golfers are more popular than others is the fact that they have learned how to do this. Their personalities exude out on the golf course. The spectator wants to see a dynamic game but they also want to witness a golfer with a compelling attitude.

Someone who is confident and has learned how to fuse all the components together so that a well played game is fun for the players and spectators.
