The world has become a smaller place in the last hundred years, due to improvements in transportation and communications technology. Certainly the World Wide Web has done a great deal to shrink the world within the period of less than twenty years!

More people are traveling far away from their homes than ever before thanks to this shrinkage. A majority of those who travel do so mainly for pleasure— to see the historic and natural attractions other places have to offer, taste new and exotic food, speak a strange language, and so on. But an increasing number of people seek to make travel a regular part of their professional lives.

There are a variety of jobs out there for such people, and they can be very rewarding. TEFL International (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) employees teachers to work in many countries; the demand for such workers in countries such as Cambodia is increasing, and is also strong in Central Europe, Thailand, and elsewhere.

The worldwide travel guide YouPlanet provides opportunities for those who wish to make money traveling. Employees serve as "ambassadors" who stay in hotels and dine at restaurants, cafes, and bars to find out what they are like, and report their experiences back to the organization, which can use that information in making the next issue of their travel guide. The best thing is that you can start with your own hometown, which is itself a potential tourist destination. Prospective users can register online.

It must be mentioned that many of these jobs have requirement qualifications. To be a teacher, for instance, one must have an education degree and a teaching certificate. Being able to speak the language is also important; a "For Travelers" book can be helpful. One should also be able to adjust and adapt to a different cultural setting; and no one should travel for any reason without first doing his homework. Other cultures have their social rules, and violating them can result in extreme violence. As Michael Weston once said on "Burn Notice," "In Russia, you never refuse a vodka. In Pakistan, you always clear your dinner plate."

I do not think that working abroad is a good idea for someone who has a spouse and children who may be forced to spend weeks or even months on end without that person. Only a single person should go into that venture; no one should sacrifice family for work.
