Some bicycle owners only really get on a bike in order to commute to work. There are certainly plenty of advantages associated with commuting in this way. Some note that it's a cheaper way to travel, while others are keen to point out the environmental advantages.

Cycling to work is not always without its dangers. Many of us are employed in companies that are based in major towns and cities. This means that getting to work often involves making use of busy roads. In some senses, this only adds to the thought that it makes more sense to travel by bike.

While cars may become stuck in traffic jams, cyclists are often able to nip ahead of the traffic. But this makes everything sound great. In reality, it's true to say that bicycle users are often left having to dodge other road users. Life for a cyclist can seem rather vulnerable in these situations.

What this illustrates is that riding a bike in town is not great fun. It may seem like a practical option and it may feel like you are thinking about the environment, but there are also clear risks involved. Unfortunately, town planners in the UK don't seem to have given much thought to this problem.

Good quality cycle paths and routes would help to solve many of the problems, but they are rarely on the agenda. In the meantime, those who actually enjoy riding a bike are forced to look at other options. What does this mean to you?

For many of us, it means taking a look at the options that are available to us in rural areas. Here, we may find that we're left dealing with considerably less traffic. Life seems that bit slower and we're able to enjoy our surroundings too. Country bike rides offer additional opportunities, often making them much more interesting.

There's nothing better than spending time with your family, enjoying a bike ride and maybe stopping for lunch in a pretty village. This is what cycling is really all about. It's about enjoyment, rather than increasing stress levels.

The next time that you think about taking your bike out for a spin, it makes a lot of sense to shun urban locations. There's often so much more to see and do once you get beyond the suburbs. Many people who cycle for leisure purposes have realised this. Now's a great time for you to find out the same.

The key with rural cycling is to be prepared. Ensure that you have a good map with you, in case of problems. Also take extra layers of clothing so that you're not caught out by changing weather conditions.

Simple preparations can keep you safe and will make sure that you enjoy yourself.
