Having an unnatural swing will only serve to hurt your golf game. If you feel uncomfortable each time you swing the golf club, this is a problem.

Your swing should flow freely and you should feel comfortable swinging the club. There are three main reasons that amateur golfers do not feel comfortable swinging the golf club: they have a correct swing but have not practiced it enough, they do not have a natural swing and need a correction, or they have a natural swing and plenty of practice but are lacking the mental game of golf.

The first of these problems is the easiest to fix. If your swing feels unnatural because you haven’t been golfing long enough for your muscle memory to autopilot your arms through the swing, then simply head to the driving range. It should take between 500 – 800 balls for your muscles to learn a set swing path and for your body to naturally swing the club.

The second problem is more difficult to correct but still just takes a little bit of practice to perfect. If your golf swing is incorrect, there are two main options. The best option is to head to your local golf club and take some lessons. Even just 4-6 lessons may be enough to give you all the instruction you need to reconstruct your golf swing. The second option is to go at it yourself. There are plenty of guides online and in magazines that can give you tips for a few simple corrections. While this may be the best option for many people who only need a few small things corrected, I will warn you that for every piece of good advice available, there are ten more people giving bad advice.

The third is often times most traitorous to amateurs. You may have everything you need in order to make a swing, but if you don’t have the mental game of golf, it will never be reflected in your score or ball flight. You may be able to swing an 8 iron perfectly but if you don’t know when to use it, you will never hit the green without a little luck. Thinking through shots will allow you determine your best course of action, such as when to go for it and when to lay up. What ends up happening is that even with a great golf swing, making poor decisions results in a loss of confidence and when you are scared to take a shot, it will make your golf swing feel very uncomfortable.

Your first step is to determine which one of these issues is your downfall and take the correct action to fix this problem. Once you obtain a natural golf swing, your round will never be more fun and your score will never be so low!
