It’s one thing to take a vacation abroad and quite another to actually spend time in a country. Visiting the sights while staying at a resort and dining with other tourists in the usual places is all very relaxing.
To really get to know a country and the people that live there you have to spend time. Unless you have unlimited funds, this is generally not an option. So how can you spend the time necessary to become immersed in a culture? You can work there.
This is going to require planning on your part. It may take some time to get all your ducks in a row. But that can also be part of the fun.
First, if the country you plan on adopting for a time does not have English as it’s native tongue, you’ll need to become proficient in that language. Whether you decide to use software on your computer, enroll in a continuing adult education class, use a book, or listen to audio tapes depends on your schedule and style of learning.
Next you’ll need to investigate the employment requirements for non-citizens in your chosen country. These vary greatly and can also change, so make sure your research is very up to date.
With those items under your belt it’s time to figure out where you want to live. Not only the actual community, but what type of dwelling. If you are planning an indefinite stay, do you want to invest in a permanent home? Will you buy a house or an apartment? Or will a rental be more suited to your plans? Laws vary on non-citizen ownership of property and research is vey important if you plan on buying a home.
Becoming a member of the community can be very fulfilling. Your new neighbors and co-workers will probably be as curious about you as you are about them. The shared involvement of exchanging ideas and bonding with people who are at once very different and very similar is a learning experience unlike any you may ever have.
You have great opportunity to learn in a way that is outside your normal sphere. You may be outside your comfort zone, but that’s part of the adventure. Whether you’re looking for something specific in this quest or are planning on broadening your horizons in general, you can be guaranteed that you’ll come back with a new perspective on life and who you are.
