Fear of the "freshman fifteen" rarely keeps the typical college student out of the dining hall! In fact, food often becomes the focus of student social gatherings.

So when you send that box of homemade cookies, that fruit basket, or that birthday cake from the local bakery, be sure to include enough for the crowd! As the saying goes, in college, "he who has food has friends"!

Yet, college students are not the only group that relishes food. When a tie just won't do for Father's Day, try sending a loaf of homemade bread or a sampler of gourmet coffee. Oftentimes, the way to a man's heart really is through his stomach!

How about food gifts for women? Well, just check the label first to be sure that the ingredients include chocolate, chocolate, and (you guessed it!) CHOCOLATE! While that statement is a generalization, it's also foolproof! The proverbial box of chocolates (regular or sugar-free), a sampler of hot chocolate, or a specialty brownie mix for the busy working woman--all of the above are sure winners with the fairer sex.

When choosing a food gift, be sure to consider any diet requirements that the recipient may have. You may have to consult a health food or specialty food store to shop for the diabetic or gluten-intolerant on your list. If all else fails, pull up an internet search engine to locate an online store that meets your loved one's dietary needs.

Though prepared food gift boxes are both convenient and popular, you may wish to consider making a statement of your own in your choice of food gifts. For instance, if you live in New England, you may choose to send a box of fresh apples from your local orchard. If you live near New Orleans, you might opt to send some packages of jambalaya mix along with a bottle or two of Tabasco sauce!

Avoid being boring or mundane with your food gifts. If everyone else is sending Christmas cookies and candy around the holidays, find a unique holiday bread recipe that will suit everyone on your list. Make homemade cheese balls and pair with a bottle of sparkling grape juice. Most people are inundated with sweets during the holidays and will make note of and enjoy your ingenuity!

Whatever the age or gender of the recipient, one can't go wrong with a food gift . . . because food means friendship, and friendship is the foundation of a happy family.
