Many golf instructors and information in golfing magazines have completely confused golfers. For some reason, the golfing industry has led golfers to believe there is a right and wrong way to swing a golf club. This is true to an extent; however, many golfers had a good swing, but simply ruined it due to all of these new theories.
Golfers hear all of this jargon about their hand position, staying on plane, hitting down on the ball and different hinges. All of these things are important to hitting the golf ball as solid as possible; however, they are all natural occurences.
The hitting down concept is probably the most confusing terminology a golfer will ever hear. They generally think that this means they have to essentially slam the club into the ground, as if it were an ax.
However, this is actually part of the swing, as the club was on the ground to begin with and gravity always pulls objects down. Golfers also struggle with the swing plane object. They hear about all of these drills to ensure that different parts of their club are pointing to the proper spot. Again, this is something that occurs naturally, and there is an excellent drill to prove this concept. Golfers also hear instructors preach about the hands being in front of the ball during impact. Well, if they actually try to force their hands in front of the ball, they will end up with a 'chicken wing,' which can result in a miserable golf shot.
The hand position is also dictated by gravity, and the only thing golfers have to manipulate is to ensure they bring the club straight down.
A good drill to check swing plane is to use an alignment stick, old shaft or even a yard stick. The golfer should stand the chosen device up, so it is parallel with the angle on their golf shaft. Now they should simply lift the club straight up, and when they look down at the alignment device they will notice the two angles are still exact. They never had to manipulate their wrists or hands; the club simply has to follow the body turn. When golfers manipulate the club inside, they are off plane. The reason for this is that the body will eventually bring the club even further inside. There is also a good drill for checking hand position. For this drill, the golfer should complete the backswing, but only bring the club down to impact. They will notice that their hands are naturally in front of the ball.
