SEO. You may have heard the term and you may also know that it is important to the relevance of your web presence, but how do you make it work for your web sites? SEO is of course Search Engine Optimization.

It is what gives your web sites the top rankings in search engines, and what helps drive visitors to the site, thus leading to page hits, which increases revenue if that is the goal, and in any event heightens the visibility of the site.

This leads to more page hits and possibly more revenue. That is how it should work anyway. The secret to SEO is to know what the search engine algorithms are seeking in the site and related information, and how this influences the ranking of the web page itself in their listings. Millions of pages are out there vying for attention, and only a select few will get the ranking that makes them stand out among their competition. It's like having the right sign on your store, one that makes people want to get through your door.

Sound complicated? That’s because it truly is. So what are some of the methods of SEO that work? Just adding some key word terms to the site does not really qualify. Looking good and having a well laid out site doesn't qualify either, although it is important.

Placing articles related to your site with back links to it is a method that is established and can help drive traffic to your site. There are many people doing this, and it’s the quality of the content of the article that will determine the success. Well placed, well written articles can work.

What of Social Media? That is one the latest methods of gaining SEO. Getting a presence on a social media site, one that will draw attention to your web site and create interest is the key. How you do this, is determined by the audience you are seeking. What sites do these potential viewers frequent? Are they actively using these media sites? Will they tolerate the spam like information that is now pouring out on them?

This is tricky and just having a page or sending out brief messages does little if no one is watching.

Using Web Directories can drive viewers to your site, if the directories themselves are being viewed.

Placing information of value on a directory can be helpful, but it is the linking back to the site that is all important.

Lastly there are Press Releases, the old tried and true method of gaining interest in your topic or business. Having a good PR person who understands how to get press releases placed can be the key here.

So do you want to tackle all this yourself? SEO can be very important to your business, or organization. Trusting someone who is experienced and who can show the results of their past efforts may prove to be the best route yet. Outsourcing your SEO project may ultimately lead to the results you seek, after all, specialization is the root of the SEO game.
