Here in Britain, it seems that we sometimes struggle to deal with outdoor dining. We may love the thought of hosting garden parties and eating outdoors, but we frequently run into problems. One of the issues seems to be that we're not quite sure what we're doing.

When we travel abroad to other European countries, we may associate outdoor eating with a certain sense of elegance. In the UK, however, images of dining in this way are more likely to remind us of cheap, plastic tables and chairs. This simply isn't the way that things are meant to be!

Sitting on a great patio area in Italy, enjoying fresh produce and basking in the sun is rather enjoyable. So why shouldn't things be the same back at home? One problem that is often mentioned is that we don't have reliable weather conditions.

Although this may be true, there are certainly periods of the year when it is generally warm. It's also true to say that we can't guarantee that it won't rain if we're planning an event some time in advance, but this also holds true elsewhere in Europe. The key to avoiding such issues is probably to ensure that you have alternative plans in place.

We are, of course, usually drawn to the idea of having a barbecue. While the people of France and Italy feast on countless delights, it seems that we're happy to settle for black sausages that have been allowed to cook for too long! It's about time that we brought about a change. So what can we do to improve the situation?

There's no doubt that we can be a lot more creative about the food that we eat and the style of events that we host. It is perfectly possible to have an outdoor dining experience without it having to involve a barbecue. Some people may find that hard to believe, but it's perfectly true!

We also need to be aware that we needn't settle for sausages, burgers, spare ribs and pieces of chicken that are covered in barbecue sauce. There's a lot more to having a meal on the terrace than having to opt for such products. Think a little differently and you're sure to impress your guests too.

If you're worried about the weather, then simply make sure that you create a suitable space inside the house. Most people won't mind if there's a last minute change of plan. Worry less and make the time to enjoy so much more!
