The simple things in life are often the most enjoyable. Modern life is often complicated. There are schedules to keep, calls to make, places to be, and things to do.
It seems there is never time to relax or just sit and "be". To have those moments again a person needs to get away from the office, the house, the laptop, the cellphone, etc. There are many ways to accomplish this. A person could go out to sea or leave the country, but the most easily accessible and affordable option is to go camping.
Camping is a quick and easy option for the quick weekend family getaway. It is not quite as simple as "have tent will travel", but it is much easier to pull off and more spontaneous than other family vacations. Time and hassle can be saved by making sure that camping equipment is always clean and ready to go.
It is a good idea to have a designated place in the garage or basement for things such as: a camping stove, sleeping bags, tents, coolers, and a camping bag filled with sundry camping equipment. Having all of these items in one central location will make rounding up the family and taking off that much easier. A last minute camping trip can quickly lose its appeal when it takes hours to pack the car.
It is rarely a problem to get a camping site on non holiday weekends, but it is always a good idea to call ahead. All camping sites are not created equal. A nice level camping site near a water source with ample shade is preferable to camping on a hill next to the porta pots, and they go quickly. By calling ahead the camper insures that his site is the best available.
Camping encourages physical activity. Modern life for most people is largely sedentary. People go to the office and sit. They sit on the couch. They sit in the car. There is a lot of sitting going on. On a camping trip this is rarely the case. The interior of a tent is no place to spend the day. It’s hot, close, and there’s not a whole lot to do. Why not go outside and have an adventure?
There are many things to do and most campgrounds will gladly rent any equipment that might be needed. Go hiking or climbing. Go fishing or canoeing. There’s really nothing else to do.
When the sun goes down is when the real appeal of camping becomes apparent. A group of friends or family sharing a campfire, making s’mores, roasting weenies, laughing, and sharing stories beats movie night any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Camping is about eliminating distractions and re-connecting with loved ones and nature.
