Playing soccer can be highly beneficial to people of all ages. Everyday more and more children are struggling with social settings, making friends, and understanding social cues. Team sports are a good therapy for this issue because they are provided in a supervised manner and offer clearly stated rules that must be followed.

If the sport is in an interest area of the child, then often times they will not even notice they are being made to follow rules, they will simply see it as a fun game to be played. This setting allows them to practice various social skills, especially working and communicating with other people.

Communication and the ability to work within a team are two skills that allow children to be successful not only when making friends, but when learning basic life skills. Children that are social butterflies often end up going on to be successful in a college setting and eventually a work environment.

With childhood obesity on the rise, team sports should also be encouraged to help the child learn the importance of staying healthy and fit.

Being overweight as a child can lead to health problems early on. Diabetes, lack of energy, and heart disease are not issues children should have to worry about. Playing a team sport will lower the amount of time a child spends playing video games and watching television.

It will also encourage them to make healthier choices in regards to their snacking habits. They will learn what foods give them the energy and stamina they need to succeed. The drive to succeed often grows when the child is involved in a group activity, because they are no longer just worried about their own success, but the success of the team as a whole.

Children today have also forgotten the simplicity of fun. It does not take a fifty dollar video game to put a smile on a child’s face.

Team sports, like soccer, are a fun and exciting way to stay fit, learn social skills, and exercise the mind. For children leading by example is the best way to encourage this.

Parents need to make a point of playing some physical games with their children. Attending practices and games is also an effective way to show encouragement and enjoyment. A parent with a smile on their face and words of encouragement ready is a parent who will be successful helping their child achieve physical and social well-being.
