The thought of spending a weekend or even a single night in the woods would set some people off in total hysterics. The pastime of camping has slowly become a less and less popular option for family vacations.

People these days are not willing to leave their DVR, internet, and game systems behind. Society is addicted to technology and has forgotten about the beauty that is nature and a what a meaningful conversation with family and friends is.

Commenting on a child’s social network status is not communicating with them. Unfortunately technology has changed the way families bond with each other. Spending a weekend camping can strengthen the bond between family and friends. Simple activities can be a lot of fun.

Roasting marshmallows while telling scary stories is a favorite campfire activity that the whole family can enjoy together. Taking a hike, counting the stars, cooking together, these are all activities that bring a sense of closeness that has been removed by the hustle of everyday life.

The whole idea of camping is about enjoying togetherness while realizing how simply basic life can be. Camping provides an opportunity to forget about work, school, and all the stress of being at home. It is relaxation in its simplest and sweetest form.

People that have never been camping need to realize that it does not mean sleeping under the stars. The type of camping is up to the family’s personal taste.

If sleeping in a tent is not appealing, then renting a cabin or camper is an alternative choice. Camping is also affordable. A Family vacation can get extremely expensive. Food, travel, lodging, souvenirs, they add up to a large costly trip.

Fun does not have to be expensive. A dollar amount is in no way an indicator of the quality of the vacation. Children are being brought up in a world where expense equals better. This is simply not true and camping activities can teach them this valuable lesson. Replacing the sound of honking horns and car engines with singing birds and the melody of chirping crickets can show the whole family what this world is really made of.

Children deserve to see the constellations in all their glory, not just pictures of them in books. They need to know what poison ivy looks like because the saw it, not because they walked straight into it. Families need to learn to be a family again.
